Biography

Herbert Edwin Couling was born in 1870 at Littlemore in Oxfordshire. He was the son of Thomas Couling and Sarah Burborough. ^{[1] [2]}

Herbert Edward [sic] Couling, aged 26, a porter, of 57 Besson Street, son of Thomas Couling, coachman; and Mercy Greaves, aged 28, of 57 Besson Street, daughter of Joseph Greaves, farmer; were married at the parish church of All Saints, Hatcham, in south London on 10 October 1891. ^[3] (Herbert and Mercy's ages were rather more different than is suggested by this entry. This small difference was repeated in subsequent censuses, alongside some other inaccuracies in age.)

In 1901 Herbert E. Couling was living in Sheep Street in Bicester with his wife Mercy and their children. His age was given as 38, implying a birth date in 1862 or 1863. His birthplace was given as Littlemore, Oxfordshire. He was described as a restaurant keeper. (An annotation suggests he kept a coffee house.) He worked at home on his own account. ^[4]

In 1911 Herbert E. Couling was living at 20 Sheep Street with his wife Mercy and their children. His age was given as 41, implying a birth date in 1869 or 1870. His birthplace was given as Littlemore, Oxfordshire. He was a dairyman, working at home on his own account. It was stated that Herbert and Mercy had been married for 20 complete years and had had 4 children together, all of whom were still living. ^[5]

He died in Oxfordshire in 1938, at the age of 69. ^[6]
