Death. Coulston--On the 6th September, at his residence, " Myrtle Villa," Ormond-road, East Geelong, Elijah Coulston, J.P., late of Beeac; aged 75 years.[7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
Excerpt from The Geelong Advertiser Tue 7 Sep 1897 :
Although not unexpected, the death of Mr Elijah Coulston, of Ormond road East Geelong, will be deeply regretted by a very large circle of friends and acquaintances of the deceased gentleman. The late Mr Coulston was for very many years a resident of Beeac, in the Colac district, where he was most energetic in forwarding the interests of the people living in that part of the colony. When he removed to Geelong to pass a well earned retirement, some seven or eight years ago, he again displayed energy in respect to public positions, and proved a most painstaking member of the committees of the Geelong hospital and Protestant orphan asylum and as a justice of the peace took an active interest in magisterial duties at the several police'courts in the district. For a long time past he has been in failing health, but recovered sufficiently to again seek re-election in July last as a member of the hospital committee, to which position he was elected without opposition. Yesterday afternoon, at the age of 75 years, he died at his residence at East Geelong.[12]
Excerpt from The Geelong Advertiser Thu 9 Sep 1897 :
DEATH OF A COMMITTEEMAN-.Attention was drawn by Mr Martin to the loss sustained by the institution by the death of Mr Elijah Coulston, who had been a most energetic member of the committee for some years. They all deeply regretted the death of the gentleman named, and he moved a resolution to the effect that a letter of condolence be sent to Mrs Coulston. The president seconded the motion, which was carried. The meeting then adjourned. [13]
Excerpt from The Colac Herald Fri 10 Sep 1897 :
We deeply regret to have to chronicle the demise of a very old and most highly respected colonist in the person of Mr Elijah Coulston, which took place at his residence, East Geelong, on Monday afternoon. The cause of death was heart disease, accelerated by dropsy. For many years deceased was one of the best known and most popular residents of Beeac, where he took a deep interest in everything calculated to benefit the district. He also took a very prominent part in Colac institutions, and endeavored to push them forward by all the means in his power. For several years he represented Beeac in the Colac shire council, and had the honor of being elected to the presidential chair. He was one of the foremost supporters of the Colac Hospital, and always took the deepest interest in its welfare, so that when he left Colac the committee and subscribers recognised his labors by bestowing a life governorship on him. He held the position of returning officer for the Polwarth electorate for some 30 years, and always discharged the duties in a faithful and accurate manner. He was also an honorary magistrate for this bailiwick. He removed to Geelong some eight years ago, and though advanced in years took a leading part in the charitable institutions there. The deceased came to the colony in 1860, and though he had reached the ripe old age of 76 years, there is always a certain pang of regret at losing a valued member of the community. The deceased had only one son, Mr J. W. Coulston. His remains were interred in the Beeac cemetery on Wednesday, Mr T. Sharrow attending to the mortuary arrangements. There was a large attendance at the funeral, and a service was conducted in the Wesleyan Church by Rev. H. C, Farley, who also read the service at the grave. The pall bearers were Messrs T. Hall, Judd, Trask, Thompson, D.Craig and R. Gainger. [14]
He is buried at Beeac Cemetery, Beeac, Victoria, Australia [15]
