Biography
Joseph Wilkinson Coulson was born in 1865 in Newbottle, Durham, England to Joseph Coulson and Isabella (Coulson) Coulson. His birth was registered in Houghton Le Spring, Durham in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Coulson.[1]
In 1871 Joseph W Coulson (age 5, Scholar) lived in Newbottle with his father Joseph (32, Farmer), mother Isabella (24), two brothers: Richard T (3, Scholar) and David I (0), visitor Ann Coulson (59, Farmer's Wife), and two servants: Margaret Greenswood (33, General Servant) and Joseph Bawter (15, Agricultural Labourer).[2]
In 1881 Joseph N Coulson (age 15, Farmers Son Employed On Farm) lived at Front St in Newbottle with his father Joseph (42, Farmer of 151 Acres Employs 1 Lab & 1 Woman), mother Isabella (34), and six brothers: Richard T (13, Farmers Son Employed On Farm), David J (10, Scholar), William A (7, Scholar), Jacob (6, Scholar), George E (2), and Joseph (1).[3]
Joseph Wilkinson Coulson married Mary Jane Tulip in 1890. The marriage was registered in Houghton Le Spring in the third quarter of the year.[4]

In 1901 Joseph W Coulson (age 35, Clerk to Guardians) lived in South Shields, Durham with his wife Mary J (35) and five children: Horace W (9), Edna T (7), Hilda M (5), Laura I (4), and Infant [Kenneth] (0), as well as visitor Elizabeth Rutter (51) and servant Jane Forster (18).[6]
In 1911 Joseph Wilkinson Coulson (age 45, Clerk to the Guardians for Board of Guardians) lived in South Shields with his wife Mary Jane (45) and four children: Horace Wilkinson (19, Pupil of Civil Engineering), Edna Tulip (17, Student), Hilda Mary (15, School), and Laura Isabella (14, School), as well as servant Sarah Burns (23, Housemaid).[7]
Joseph W Coulson passed away on 20 Mar 1940, aged 74 years. His death was registered in Taunton, Somerset in the first quarter of the year.[8]
