Biography

Sarah Ann Coulson was born in 1830 to Jehu "John" Coulson (1801-1865) and Catharine (Holland) Coulson (1809-1883). [1]

    "Sarah Ann Coulson, was born in 1830. She taught several terms of school; she was never married, was very independent, and lived many years alone. She was the friend of the unfortunate and was honored and esteemed by all her acquaintances. She was very careful and saving and left quite a little property to her nieces and nephews. After a short illness she died of a fever April 6, 1906, and was buried in Woodsdale cemetery, Columbiana county, Ohio." [2]

At the time of the 1850 US Census, head of household John Coulson (age 49, born in Pennsylvania) was employed as a Farmer and living in a home with real estate valued at $1,500 in Fox, Carroll, Ohio, United States with his wife Catharine Coulson (age 44, born in Ohio), their daughter Sarah Ann Coulson (age 19, born in Ohio), their daughter Mary A. Coulson (age 15, born in Ohio), their son George H. Coulson (age 14, born in Ohio), and their son Job V. Coulson (age 10, born in Ohio). [3]

At the time of the 1860 US Census, head of household John Coulson (age 59, born in Pennsylvania) was working as a Farmer and living on a property valued at $3,200 in Hanover Township, Columbiana, Ohio, with his wife Catharine Coulson (age 51, born in Ohio), their daughter Sarah A. Coulson (age 29, born in Ohio), son George H. Coulson (age 24, born in Ohio), and Job V. Coulson (age 19, born in Ohio). George was working at the time as a Teacher. The value of John's personal estate was listed as $614.[4]

At the time of the 1880 US Census, head of household Catharine Coulson (age 72, born in Ohio) was Widowed and occupied with Keeping House and living in Hanover, Columbiana, Ohio with her daughter, Sarah Coulson (age 50, born in Ohio), and her nephew Louis H. Coulson (age 44, born in Ohio). Both of Catharine's parents were born in Pennsylvania. Sarah's father's birthplace was Pennsylvania, and her mother's was Ohio. Louis's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. [5]

Death and Legacy

Sarah Ann Coulson died in 1906, and is buried at Woodsdale Cemetery, Guilford, Columbiana County, Ohio, USA.[6] Sarah's obituary published in the newspaper in Apr 1906 read:

    Miss Sarah Ann Coulson. Lisbon, April 9. -- (Special.) -- Miss Sarah Ann Coulson, 75 years old, is dead at the home of her sister, Mrs. Thompson Randolph, at Winona. She had gone there from Guilford on a visit about three weeks ago and was taken sick there. She was a lifelong resident of Guilford and vicinity. Besides her sister a brother George, in Kansas, survives her.
