Biography

James Coulter was born in about 1670 at Roucan, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. [1] His parents are possibly Nathaniel Coulter and Elizabeth Prettyman.

He married Eleanor Torbett in about 1692.

He died in 1713, [2] apparently at sea between Scotland and Ireland, possibly on 8 July or "9/2" 1713.

His widow Eleanor and several of their children immigrated to Lewes, Delaware between 1714 and 1721. [3]

Coulters in Ireland By Julie Sheffer April 21, 2007 at 06:25:27 In reply to: Re: Coulter's in Ireland Janet Ariciu 3/21/07. My Coulter information:

Coulter Village in the Parish of Coulter in Lanarkshire, Scotland. There is up the Coulter Glen the remains of a 9th Century fort of wooden palisades and circular earthen mounds known as "Coo-Castle." "Ku-tir" evolved into "Cultir or Culter," which eventually became "Coulter." Coulter Village was named Culter until this century.

In that part of Scotland, Coulter is still pronounced with the "l" remaining silent -- "C__ter." Lambie, George and Murray discount the idea that Coulter came from the Gaelic/Celtic word "cou", meaning "back-land" or "thin shaped land", because that Celtic form is from a later language that the British Celtic and "Cu-tir" was in existence hundreds of years before the later Celtic/Gaelic language.

In the 12th and 13th centuries when the lowland Scots began adopting surnames after the Norman habit of using placenames, persons from Coulter became known as "John from/of Coulter." For example, the first recorded Coulter was "Richardus de Coulter" or "Richard of Coulter," thus "Richard Coulter," in 1226. Richard Coulter was Sheriff of Lanark at the time. These Coulters from Coulter Village and/or Coulter Parish (Barony in earlier times) spread out in lowland Scotland.

About 1606 many of these Coulters went to northern Ireland with Montgomery and Hamilton under King James 1's "plantations" of Ulster, Ireland. Coulters were among the first to settle in Ireland and came primarily from the counties of Ayr and Lanark. Later, in the late 17th and early 18th centuries many of these Coulters migrated to North America; hence the Scots-Irish (or Ulster Scots) Coulters. Some Scots-Irish Coulters came later in the middle of the 19th Century.

Robert Coulter, His People came from Scotland to Ireland in 1747 when he was 27, then to America in 1760 at age 40, Robert and Mary came with there familys. She was a Stuart and her father was Levi Stuart. He fought for Bonnie prince Charles in 1745-1747, then left Scotland. Robert Coulter Left Scotland 1746-47 after the battle of Culloden. Fought on the side of Bonnie Prince Charles. Seems a price was put on his head, so he left Scotland. (Narrative continues at link) [3]

The BATTLE OF CULLODEN in 1746 meant, quite simply, the end of an era for Scotland. The Battle of Culloden was fought on Drumossie Moor, to the north east of Inverness, on April 16, 1746. Battle of Culloden - BBC (www.bbc.co.uk/history/scottishhistory/union/trails_union_culloden.shtml)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Battle of Culloden (/kəˈlɒdən/, Scottish Gaelic: Blàr Chùil Lodair) was the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745 and part of a religious civil war in Britain. On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart were decisively defeated by loyalist troops commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. • CoulterII Family

I am working on find out what were the names of the Coulter who came to America in the 1700s. The Coulter family owned their own ships. I was told that if the Captain of the ship brought his family aboard. That he did not have to list them with passengers of the his ship. So this means that our Coulter family could have been aboard not have been listed. The only I think that we can find out who was on this list is by look at the first names of the Coulter families in the time frame. The Coulters came from Dumfriesshire about the end of the seventeenth century, and were soon leading merchants.

James Coulter died in 1708, leaving a legacy to the Merchants' House. Michael Coulter was a merchant and Bailie, and died in 1732, doing likewise. John, the proprietor of "The Grove," was a capital citizen, always active in the service of the city, and Lord Provost in 1736. James Coulter, another of the family, was an encourager of art in manufacture, and at his death left a sum of money to found an annual prize for the most artistic production. Lawrence Coulter, or Lawrie Coulter, as he was familiarly called, was known to everyone in Glasgow in his day. He is a prominent figure in one of Kay's prints, published in 1793. [4]

Biography of Francis Coulter (1771-1846) Submitted by Ray LaFever, December 10, 2002 Coulter was a major name in the Town of Bovina since the early 1800s. The road on which the founding Coulter ancestor lived still is known as Coulter Brook. Though there are no Coulters currently in Bovina, there are many Coulter descendants there, and those with the Coulter name still live in Delaware County and throughout the United States. This makes it all the more ironic that Francis Coulter, ancestor of many of Bovina's older families, was not born a Coulter. When Francis was christened 3 September 1771 in Roberton, Scotland, he was christened Francis Coltherd. Born on 25 August 1771 in Kelso, Scotland, he was the son of Walter Coltherd and Elizabeth Rae. His parents were married in 1762/63. If Francis had any siblings, no record has turned up of them. [5]

  • Lanarkshire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Lanarkshire, also called the County of Lanark (Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Lannraig, Scots: Lanrikshire) is a historic county in the central Lowlands of Scotland. Historically, Lanarkshire was the most populous county in Scotland and, in earlier times, had considerably greater boundaries, including neighbouring Renfrewshire until 1402. In modern times, it is bounded to the north by Stirlingshire and a detached portion of Dunbartonshire, to the northeast by Stirlingshire, West Lothian, to the east by Peeblesshire, to the southeast and south by Dumfriesshire, to the southwest by Dumfriesshire and Ayrshire and to the west by Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire. DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Gary Coulter - I have info from a book "Coulter Family Footprints" by Janis Barry, that has James Micajah Coulter born about 1670 In Roucan, Dumprieshire, Scotland and died in 1713 (believed at sea).

He married Eleanor Torbett about 1692 (daughter of John Torbett). Eleanor was born 1676 (same place as James) and died 7/30/1739 in Cool Springs, Delaware.

This book is about 800 pages and Janis Barry is elderly but still sharp.
