Phyllis was born Phyllis May Coulter on the 3rd of September, 1904 in Motueka, Nelson, New Zealand.^[1], the daughter of William Coulter and Sarah Kitto.

At 21, on the 22nd of December, 1925, she married Jack Buchanan in New Zealand,^{[2][citation needed]}k and they had 2 children.

At 85, on the 28th of January, 1990, she died at Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.^{[citation needed]}
