Biography

Annie was born in Dec 1846 to William Courtenay, clothier, and Caroline Mason. She was baptised 7 Mar 1847 at St Mary's, Whitechapel, Stepney, Middx. Her father was a clothier and, per Annie's granddaughter Nora, she attended a private school in Richmond (where she would have learned to sew, inter alia). She was about 5' tall.

After her mother died, she said her father remarried, and his daughters did not get on with this shopgirl. So none of them worked there and sister Mary Ann appears to have gone into service. She could well have done the same, although why cross town to Stepney, unless she knew somebody there, and to a very young household, the oldest 24.

Her first husband, George Jackson, left her their house (or the lease), and a year later she married her lodger John Wilton.

She did keep in touch with her family. She had her nephew Paul Roberts living in the house in 1881, knew her father was retired in 1885, and told Nora of a cousin in the RAF in WWI. Annie passed away in 1925.
