Research Notes

1. The above husband was responsible for fortifying the town of Courtenay, and as a result his descendants fell heir to the Lordship of that town and took the name "de Courtenay" thereafter. Although it is not certain whether the above husband ever took that name in life, he is still referred to on genealogical tables as "de Courtenay" though not born there.

2. Ancestor of Elizabeth Lowell (David Dickinson), of Haute Wyatt, of Sarah Covell, Mrs William Nickerson (Frederick Augustus Otte), of Elizabeth Parker, wife of William Adkins, and of John Alston (Smith Patterson). Also called Hatto. Son of Castellan of Chateau Renard, fl 1010.
