Biography

John was born in 1825. He immigrated to the US from Ireland with his wife Mary Cassidy and daughter Ann Courtney (born 1845, Ireland). Their second daughter, Margaret, was born in 1849 in Iowa. On the 1850 Census he was living in Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa, occupation laborer. Mary died on 6 June 1851. In the 1860 Census he is in Mount Pleasant, occupation Drayman. 1870, 1880 and 1900 Censuses he live in Canaan Township, Henry County, occupation farmer. He dies in 1902 and buried at the Old City Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa.

He was naturalized as a US Citizen on 6 March 1854 at the District Court, Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa. His Intent to Become a Citizen stated he was a native of Louth, Ireland.

John married Nancy Julie Rhoden on 3 May 1853. John and Nancy had 9 children. Mary Ellen Courtney (married Mahlon Terhune Lee), Jennie Courtney (died at 6 months), John Courtney, Rosa Courtney (married John Robert Barry), Elizabeth Medora Courtney (married Thomas Layafette Calhoun), Hattie Courtney, Martha Jane Courtney (married Joseph Henry Mills), Katherine Courtney, and Henry Courtney. John farmed in Canaan Township, Henry County, Iowa. He passed away in 1902. In the 1900 Census his daughters Margaret, Hallie and Katerine were living with him.
