Biography

Clara Jane Courtney is born in 1842 in Brighton, Sussex. She is baptised in St Peter’s Church on May 29, 1842 [1]. Her parents are Charles Courtney (1820-1843) and Jane Elizabeth Earl (1821-1846). Her mother also goes by the name “Jane Elizabeth Earl Lansdell.”

Clara’s father dies a year after she is born. While there is some uncertainty about what happens after 1843, the best guess is that her mother re-marries in 1845 and Clara is brought up by relatives. In the 1851 census records, Clara is eight years old living with her grandmother (Ann Earl who by 1851 is going by the name “Ann Lansdell”) [2]. In the 1861 census records, Clara is living with an uncle and aunt in London [3].

In early 1869 Clara comes down with tuberculosis. She dies from it on January 23, 1869 [4].
