Biography

The daughter of Henry Harrison Courtney (1885-1956) and Cora Mae Alexander (1867-1927), Bertha Courtney was born in Athens County, Ohio^{[citation needed]} in 1885, residing with her family by 1900 in Green Township, Ohio, in Hocking County.^[1] Her siblings included:

1. Lewis A. Courtney (1883-)
2. Frederick Clark Courtney (1886-)
3. Floyd Courtney (1891-)
4. Ethel Courtney (1893-1945)
5. Laura Belle Courtney (1895-)

Bertha Courtney married Sheridan Blackburn, marrying in Athens County, Ohio on December 11, 1906^[2] and having three children together. They made their home in Nelsonville, Ohio, where her husband worked as a coal miner.^[3] By 1920, her husband had left the coal mine and worked as a billing clerk in a railroad freight office,^[4] working as the foreman by 1930.^[5][6]

Bertha's husband left the railroad and they moved to Columbus, Ohio^[7] Bertha Blackburn passed away in Columbus^{[citation needed]} at the age of 70 and is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville, Ohio.^[8]
