Biography

James Coutts was born on 15 February 1846 at Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He was baptised 20 Feb 1846 at Strathdon, Aberdeen, Scotland.^[1]

In 1851, James was living with his parents at Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. ^[2]

In 1856, he emigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings and settled in the Midhurst, Ontario region.^[3]

On 22 October 1873, James married Mary Montieth at Vespra, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. Together they created 10 children.^[4]

In 1891, James was living at Simcoe North, Ontario, Canada.^[5]

In 1901, James was living at Simcoe North, Ontario, Canada.^[6]

In 1911, James was living at Simcoe North Sub-Districts 1-46, Ontario, Canada with his wife Mary and 5 children aged 17 to 29.^[7]

James' wife Mary passed away 23 December 1913.^[8]

On 7 July 1915, James married the widow Ellen (Tweed) Carruthers at Barrie, York, Ontario, Canada.^[9]

James Coutts passed away on 8 December 1919.^[10] He was laid to rest at Midhurst, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada.^[11]

"James Coutts was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and came to Canada with his parents, Mr. & Mrs Duncan Coutts, who homesteaded on the farm on Lot 20, Concession 2, Vespra. When about 22 years of age James Coutts returned to Scotland where he attended school for some time.

On returning to Canada, Mr. Coutts ran a saw mill for a Mr. Robinson for two years and then had a mill of his own for a year. He then bought a homestead, Lot 14, Concession 3, which was all bush except about 15 acres.

He was actively associated with the Barrie Agricultural Society for many years and was appointed as an honorary director in recognition of his valuable services.

Potatoes and apples were his specialties on the farm and he was always trying out new varieties in addition to growing those of proven worth. Some years he would have as many as 25 varieties in his potato field.

Always interested in movements that promised for the good of the farmer, he connected himself with the Patrons of Industry, during the comparatively brief existence of that organization, and was its standard bearer in Centre Simcoe in 1894 when he went down by a small minority in a three-cornered fight with the late Robt. Paton. For a time he served in the Township Council.

James Couts was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church and for many years served as superintendent of the Sunday School at Midhurst. He was a member of Balmoral Camp, Sons of Scotland."^[12]
