Burges' Choice (William Burges) 12/9/1666 -400/436 acres/ L10/421 SR7352
Know yee that for and in consideration that Capt. William Burges of our Province of Maryland, Gent, hath due four hundred acres of land within our s'd Province by afsignment of Robert Franklin, afsignee of John Shaw being a warrant of five hundred and ninety acres afsigned to Shaw by George Puddington, as appears on record. Doe hereby grant unto the s'd Burges a parcel of land called Burges' Choice lying in Ann Arundell COunty in the worods on the south side of the South River beginning at a marked Oak in the line of Anne Covill. Also adjoins tract belonging to Richard Cheney and Marin Duvall. Note: This tract was initially pattented to John Covill (the elder) as Covill's Lott ($ May 1664). However, the same 400 acre tract was surveyed for John Shaw in November 1665. On 23 August 1666, Shaw sold the certification to Robert Franklin and on the same day Franklin assigned the tract to Capt. William Burges. By this time, John Covill the elder had died and Burges claimed that ownership of the tract had not passed properly to his so and heir John Covill Jr. Covell Jr and his mother and guardian Ann Covill failed to show up at Provincial Court hearing in October 1666 and the tract was awarded to Burges (L10/419). The tract was resurveyed again (4/13/1708) by Benjamin Burges (son and heir of William Burges) and found to be 747 acres.
