Mattie (Martha) was born 1 April 1857. She was a child of John Martin Covington and Mary Jane Washburn. Mattie passed away in 1895.

In the 1860 Census for Amite County, Mississippi JUST BEFORE THE WAR OF NORTHERN AGGRESSION, the family of John Martin Covington is listed as follows:

Jane, 16, Mississippi (Jane is the daughter of John Covington's brother, Robert who became ill enough in 1848 to request John be granted guardianship of his only child, Jane).
The 1870 census record for Amite County, Mississippi is a researcher's nightmare! The Census taker used INITIALS for many of the residents, including our Mary Jane Washburn! Clearly, some of the ages of the children have been incorrectly stated!!
