James Moffat Cowan ... He passed away in 1947. First-hand information as remembered by Rodney Kietzman, Thursday, October 16, 2014.

James Moffat Cowan was born in King's Norton, Worcestershire, England in 1900. His birth was registered in Q2 (Apr-May-Jun) 1900.

His parents were William Moffat Cowan and Isabella Mitchell McGavin .

He had a brother, also called James Moffat Cowan, who was born and died in Q4 1896 in King's Norton, Worcestershire, England.

He had two sisters, Isabella Anderson Cowan (1901 - 1938), who was born in Kings Norton, Worcestershire, England, and Edith Mitchell Cowan (1904 - 1954), who was also born in Kings Norton, Worcestershire, England.

By 1911 both of his parents had passed away. At some point he left England and settled in South Africa. Nothing definite has been found in the records to put a date on this. I found one possible source. There was a sailing in 1913 from England to Australia, and a James Cowan, born in about 1900, was a passenger. See below. It is likely that he arrived and disembarked at Cape Town in February 1913. This is to be checked.

His sister Edith went to live in Australia.

His other sister Isabella remained in the UK. She married a man called Daniel Macdonald and settled in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

He married Edith Noel Lambert on 8 Sep 1930 in Gauteng, Pretoria, South Africa.

He passed away in 1947 in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa. After his death his widow Edith Noel (Lambert) Cowan went to live in Australia and took their children with her.

I added Norseman, sailed 28 Jun 1913. The ship sailed from London to Cape Town and on to Australia. This sailing may be the right one. In any case I haven't found another one that comes anywhere near. Check it out.
