Biography

Jesse was my great-grandfather. I never knew him, what I know of him is from research and family lore. His first marriage was to my great-grandmother Martha Barber. As far as I can tell Jesse and Martha appear to have had 7 children. Jesse's 2nd marriage was to Mary Etta Arbaugh. Jesse and Mary appear to have had 5 children. Jesse's third and final marriage was to Mary's younger sister Elizabeth "Lizzie" Arbaugh. Jesse and Lizzie married in Arkansas. A few years after marrying they moved to Lousiana, remaining there until death. Jesse and Lizzie appear to have had 2 children.

Jesse Cowan's obituary was in the Monroe News-Star (Monroe, Louisiana), 29 Dec 1947. The obituary can be found with paid membership at Newspapers.com. The following is from his obituary:

Date of birth January 1859 at Newton Arkansas. Jesse and his 3rd wife settled on Cypress Grove Plantation in Concordia Parish in 1917. Jesse lived there until the time of his death. He died at the home of his son Albert Cowan. According to the obituary 3 children predeceased him. His survivors included his wife, 7 sons and 2 daughters.

The obituary incorrectly states Jesse Cowan and the former Lizzie Arbuth had 10 children. The info I have now (which could change) only shows 2 children belonging to Lizzie. The other children would have been by his first 2 wives. But it would appear Jesse and Lizzie also raised Jesse's children by his 2nd wife, Mary Etta Arbaugh.
