Samuel Coward was born about 1828. [1] There is a Samuel Coward in the 1860 census in Marlboro County, South Carolina as the head of the household of a bunch of McQuages, the oldest of whom is a 14 year old male. It is possible that Caroline and Samuel were separated at that time. Samuel is listed as a 32-year-old farmer, not able to read or write, and owning only personal property -- no real property. [1] He passed away in 1888.
It appears clear that Samuel Houston Coward born 1828 in North Carolina and married to Matilda Phillips is a different person. See [1].
It is possible that he served in the Confederate Army out of South Carolina. [2] This seems likely to be him so his death date will be after 1963. Samuel did serve in the Civil War in the regiment out of Marlboro County, SC https://catalog.archives.gov/id/108141707
Note: In the 1870 census of Smithville, Marlboro, South Carolina, Caroline Coward is the head of the household #364. James Coward is the head of the household #365. One might assume that he is the brother of Samuel Coward because of the closeness of the households and because of his age. This might give a hint as to the parentage of Samuel Coward.[3]
