First wife was Mary G. (Prunty) Cowden b. 1809, warren, Kentucky and died in 1849 in Illinois either Downs McLean or Bloomington. They were married on Jan, 9, 1828 at Bowling Green, Warren county, Kentucky.[2] They had 11 children, 4 of which appeared to have died at birth or infancy.
Rives moved to Springfield, Mo in 1849 where he purchased 400 acres Turrill Creek Bottom.
He married Julie Ann Smith on 24 Nov 1856 in Polk county, Missouri.[3] They had a large family.
