Birth

James Cowden was born c. 1856 in Dalbeattie, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland to Hugh Cowden (c. 1808-1891) and Elizabeth Grierson (c. 1813-after 1891).

  1. John Cowden born c. 1836. He married Jane Unknown before December 1880. John died after 1901 probably in Speymouth, Moray, Scotland where he was noted as a retired gardener on the 1901 census.
  2. Elizabeth Cowden born c. 1837. She died in 1877 in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland.
  3. Hugh Cowden, Jr. born c.1839. Hugh, Jr. married Jane Patton ( c. 1841-before April 1881) c. 1865. He died after 1901.
  4. William Cowden born December 1840 in Dalbeattie, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
  5. Agnes Cowden born c. 1845.
  6. Christopher Cowden born c. 1847.
  7. Mary Cowden born c. 1848.
  8. Jane Cowden born October 1850.
  9. Margaret Walburga Cowden born in 1853. She married William McAdam (1841-1924) in c. 1874 in Scotland. Margaret died in 1942 in Scotland.

The 4 April 1881 Census places him at parental home on Hill Head in Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, UK, 25 years old, carter.[1]
