Biography

Ann Cowen

Ann Cowen was the fifth child born to Peter Cowen and Mary Merrill. She was born March 5, 1817, in Warren County, now Simpson County, Kentucky.

Erasmus F. Bunch married Ann Cowen on March 17, 1841, in Simpson County, Kentucky. Children of Erasmus and Ann Bunch are:

  1. Marion Baxter Bunch, born March 6, 1842 in Simpson County, Kentucky; died November 25, 1891 in Simpson County, Kentucky. He married Amanda Roark; born October 16, 1858; died June 7, 1933 in Simpson County, Kentucky. Marion Baxter Bunch Burial in Blackjack Baptist Church Cemetery, Simpson County, Kentucky. He married Melvinia Finn in Simpson County, Kentucky; born January 14, 1867; died May 11, 1921 in Simpson County, Kentucky. Erasmus F. Bunch died before 1860.

From lawsuit in 1885 regarding land, involving the Bunch heirs and the Cowen heirs.

By virtue of a judgment of the Simpson County Circuit Court, rendered at its March term, 1885, in the above styled cause, the undersigned, as Master Commissioner of said Court, will, on Monday, the 20th day of April 1885, at the Court House Door, in Franklin, KY, about the hour of 1 o’clock p.m. offer for sale at public auction, to the highest and best bidder, on a credit of six months the following property, to wit: One tract of land lying in Simpson County, KY, on the waters of Drake’s Creek about six miles northeast from Franklin, KY, and being a part of the Simeon Bunch lands and bounded as follows, viz, On the East by the lands of Baxter Bunch, on the North by the lands devised to Louisa Fletcher by Simeon Bunch, dec’d, on the west by lands of the heirs of Granville Bunch, dec’d and on the South by lands of the heirs of Erasmus Bunch, dec’d. containing about 80 acres.

Depositions from this lawsuit state that Erasmus Bunch and Ann, his wife, lived on 96 acres deeded him by Peter Cowen. This may have been a part of the original land. Ann and her children continued to live there after Erasmus died. It is likely that Ann’s mother Mary deeded this property to Ann at the time of her marriage.

Ann Cowen died August 21, 1897, Simpson County, Kentucky. Ann Cowen was buried in Blackjack Baptist Church Cemetery, Simpson County, Kentucky.[1]

Note: Ann's tombstone reads:

Ann Bunch, wife of E. F. Bunch
Born Simpson County, Kentucky
5 Mar 1817 - 21 Aug 1897

In September 2001 we went to the Blackjack Baptist Cemetery where Ann is buried. Buried around her are her four sons, E. King Bunch and his wife Melvinia Finn Bunch; M. Baxter Bunch and his wife Amanda Roark Bunch; Zuinglius Bunch and his wife Mildred Ann Bunch, and their son Frederick; Joseph F. Bunch (cemetery record does not show a wife buried there and somehow, I don't think we identified his grave while we were there. We took pictures of the others but not his) We felt a connection standing where some of the Cowen family were buried! There were many others with the surname Bunch buried in the same area. The cemetery is in the country and is across the street from the Black Jack Union Baptist Church. We have no record of where Ann's husband is buried. Recalling he was a preacher in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Did Ann and family remain Baptist or return to the Baptist fold after Erasmus death?
