Duane T. Cowen, 71, one of Bellaire's most prominent citizen's, passed away at the home of his son, Henry D. Cowen at Overlook Court, last Friday morning. He had been ill for a week and pneumonia developed. Mr. Cowen was born in St. Clairsville and in early life operated a grocery store there. Later he went to Fargo, N.D. where he went into the laundry business. Later he spent a few years in the wholesale candy business in Chicago. In 1887 he came to Bellaire and founded the Cowen Insurance Agency, which he turned over to his son, H.D. Cowen about 15 years ago and went to Flushing to act as cashier for the Dollar Savings bank there. He retired two years ago and had been living with his son here since. He was a member of the Methodist church and was Sunday School superintendent for a number of years. He was affiliated with the Masons. He was always deeply interested in civic affairs and was a member, with William Siddall and the late W.C. Warnock of the first civil service commission in Bellaire. Services were held Sunday afternoon at the home of Henry D. Cowen by Rev. W. H. Mitchell of the First Methodist church. The remains were then taken to Flushing where they were interred Monday, following funeral services. (from Obituary, The Bellaire Democrat, dated Friday, January 13, 1928.
