Research Notes
The Hokitika Borough Council cleared away headstones on the north-west side of the Hokitika Cemetery during the 1960, throwing them over the bank above the access road. A car park was constructed over the graves in the area of the cemetery where Matthew Atkinson is buried with no consutlation with relatives of those buried there. I was therefore unable to place a new plaque on Matthew's grave. Although the Distict Council decades later, after lobbying by descendants of the deceased, erected a memorial acknowledging the burial of people under the car park, they refused, however to add names of the deceased to the plaque even though Thompson Funeral Directors had/has a record of those people.
