Biography

Jane was born in 1812 in Pelton near Chester-le-Street. Her parents were Nicholas Cowey and Margaret Moody. At some time after her birth it would appear that she moved to the Houghton-le-Spring area with her family. It was probably here that she met her husband William. They were married in the All Saints church in Stranton in 1834.

At the time of the 1841 census she had given birth to two children, George was born in 1837 and Nicholas in 1840. Over the next ten years she had given birth to a further three children, Hannah the first girl was born in 1845, followed by Margaret Jane in 1848 and finally Robert in 1850.

Jane lived with her husband in the same area and almost the same street in Hartlepool for her entire married life. She died in 1885 in Hartlepool at the age of 72 and had outlived her husband by two years. The following information comes from the England and Wales National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administration) 1861 – 1941. “The will and the Personal Estate of Jane Armstrong late of West Hartlepool in the County of Durham, widow, who died on the 4th March 1895 at West Hartlepool. Her will was proved by Probate at the Principal Registry Office Durham 11th December 1895 by John Scott, widow and Peter Roberts, labourers”. The value of the estate was £5 14s 0d”.
