Biography

Verne was born in 1898 [1]. He was the son of Charles H Cowles and Carrie (Billings) Cowles.

He enlisted in the USA Navy 1 March 1918 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin as an Apprentice Seamen and was stationed at the Naval Training Station (NTS) Great Lakes. He was then assigned to NTS Hampton Road, Virginia from 17 May to 1 June 1918. He then served on the USS Virginia from 1 June to 12 Dec 1818. He was promoted to Fireman 3rd Class 1 June 1918 and then to Fireman 2nd Class on 1 Nov 1918. On 12 Dec 1918 he was admitted to the Portsmouth Naval Hospital and was discharged on 12 Jan 1919. On 19 Jan 1919 he was assigned to the USS West Galoc until 15 April 1919. He then served on the USS Mayflower (Presidential yacht) from 15 May to 1 Aug 1919. He was Honorable discharged on 9 Aug 1919 from NTS Great Lakes. He received a War Service Certificate (# 309623) for honorable service. At the time of discharge he was paid $41/month.[2]

Following World War One he was a dairy farmer in South Byron. In 1945 his sire (Beechwood Spring Duke Ormsby) was recognized by the Dairy Herd Improvement Association as a proven sire [3]

He married Pearl Alma Summers 7 Sep 1940 in Nachua, Iowa at the Little Brown Church in the Vale.[4] They had 5 children. In 1953 the family sold the farm and moved to Fond du Lac and bought a grocery store. After several years the grocery store was closed and Verne work construction.

He died 14 Nov 1980 in Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.[5] and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery Oakfield, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. [6]
