John C. Cowles, Orwell Postmaster 20 Years, Dies

John Clifton Cowles, Sr., 60 of Orwell and postmaster at the Orwell Post Office for 20 years, died Saturday afternoon following a three and one half month illness.

Born in Orwell, May 18, 1899, son of the late John and Flora Eastman Cowles, he was a graduate of Orwell high school and Pennsylvania State College as a member of the School of Mechanical Engineering.

Mr. Cowles was a member of the R. O. T. C. and served in the U. S. Army during World War 1. He was a past master of LeRay Lodge 471 F. and A. M. and was a member of the Scottish Rite bodies of the Valley of Towanda 40-18 and the Williamsport Consistory 32nd degree.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 42 of Bradford County World War Veteran's Last Man's Club, Orwell grange, and the Orwell Federated church as a Presbyterian. He served many years as an elder of the church and superintendent and teacher of the Sunday school.

He is survived by his wife Ethel Chaffee Cowles; one daughter, Mrs. Jean Lundy; one son A 3-c John C. Cowles Jr., of the U. S. Air Force stationed in Iceland; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Kennedy of Rome and Mrs. Lucille Snyder of Indiana, Pa.; two grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

The body is at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel in Nichols where friends may call this evening from 7 until 9 o'clock.

Funeral services will be held at the Orwell Federated church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Dale Linebaugh and Rev. Manley Tuttle officiating.

Burial will be in Bradford County Memorial Park.[1]
