Biography

Joseph Cowles was born 18 June 1677 in Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony to parents Samuel Cowles and Abigail Stanley. He came to Wallingford, probably in the late 1690s, shortly before his first marriage, to Abigail Royce. (See below.). His father-in-law gave him first a farm in what would become Meriden Parish, followed in 1701 by a gift of 107 acres on Ox Hill. [1]

He married first, on 13 July 1699 in Wallingford, New Haven County, Abigail Royce, daughter of Deacon Samuel Royce and Hannah (Churchill) Royce, of Wallingford. Together they had the following children:

  1. Lois, born 25 April 1700,
  2. Ledia, also born 25 April 1700,[2]
  3. Samuel, born 10 December 1701; died 18 February 1701/2,
  4. Abigail, born 18 January 1702/3,
  5. Samuel, born 2 Feb 1704/5; died 15 February 1704/5,
  6. Hannah, born 11 April 1706,
  7. Eunice, born 28 April 1708,
  8. Joseph, born 4 March 1710,
  9. Samuel, born 14 March 1712.[1]

Joseph's wife Abigail died 24 May 1714.[1]

He married, second, on 1 April 1715 in Wallingford, Anna (Peck) Yale, daughter of John Peck of Wallingford, and widow of Nathaniel Yale. She died 26 February 2016, likely from complications of birth. She had given birth to son Benjamin a few days before, on 23 February. Benjamin died soon after, on 15 March.[1]

He married third, on 29 May 1717 in Wallingford, Mindful [unknown] Whaples, widow of Ephraim. They had one child together, Ebenezer, born 26 February 1718.[1]

Joseph Cowles died 30 November, 1760 in Meriden Parish, Wallingford. He and his wife Mindful are buried on the Old Meeting House Cemetery in Meriden.ref name=cowles />[3]

NOTE: [Andrews-1460|Sarah (Andrews) Cowles) has been disconnected as a wife of Joseph Cowles. Rather, on 1 November 1709 she married Isaac Cowles in Farmington.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

I don't see this child listed for Joseph and Abigail that is linked to them: Ledia Cowles (abt. 1691 - 1769) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cowles-209

Do you think she belongs? The record is orphaned so can't ask the original person.

Ledia was listed here as one of the twins born April 1700. I do not see Ledia in any of the sources. I suggest some more research to see if the linked profile is correct.
