Jonathan Cowles was born on June 30, 1703, in Hatfield, Massachusetts. He was the son of Jonathan Cowles and Prudence Frary. He married Sarah Gaylord on January 13, 1732, in Hadley, Massachusetts. From Cowles, Calvin Duvall. 1929. Genealogy of the Cowles Families in America. Vol. I. Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor. Pages 82 and 83.
He removed from Hatfield to Amherst, Mass., about 1731 and was a founder of the original church in 1739; served upon committees and held many town offices.
In the history of Amherst they are classed among the prominent families of the town.
His estate was settled at Northampton, Mass. by an agreement signed Dec. 13, 1776, by his widow and all of his heirs then living.

Just reviewed the Genealogy of the Cowles; Jonathan and Prudence did have sons named John b. 27 Dec. 1700 and Jonathan b. 30 Jun. 1703; both were born at Hatfield, MA; both removed to Amherst as the early settlers of that community and both were a founder of the original church in 1739. John married Mary Jennings of Brookfield, MA; Jonathan married Sarah Gaylord of Hadley, MA.
Cowles-463 has a 2nd spouse, Sarah Gaylord. I found no 2nd spouse for John Cowles-1222 whose spouse is Mary Jennings. John Cowles-463 has a birth date of 30 Jun 1703. John Cowles-1222 has a birth date of 27 Dec 1700. It does seem strange that parents would name 2 sons John and Jonathan. It would not be strange if one had died young. A conundrum.
I noted one other item; Cowles-463 does not have a son Israel who I find in almost all the Lineages I've looked at. I've spent some time reviewing other family Trees - several have John and Jonathan listed separately as brothers with definitely different birth and death dates.
I suggest that Cowles-463 be detached from wife Mary Jennings. that would resolve the situation.
