"Marriages of Some Virginia Residents" lists him being of Charles City County, Virginia. DAR #31 159 & #57 614 and another #8W(1)275 ???
In 1783, he owned 20 slaves. http://www.virginians.com/t.htm?g.2.1.1 excerpt from their notes "Thomas Cowles of Charles City County held 1,100 acres on Winticomack Creek in Amelia County. He bought 700 acres and a mill from James Tucker S r. and James Tucker Jr. in 1750, 200 acres from Robert Coleman in 1750, a nd 200 acres from William Bevill in 1768. Abraham Green, Sarah Green, a nd Thomas Green Jr. witnessed the Coleman deed. Cowles later lea sed 100 acres back to Bevill. Amelia County charged Cowles on 984 acre s in 1763. Thomas Cowles left a will in Charles City County, which named three son s and three daughters, without identifying his wife (will dated 25 Nov. 1 769, recorded 6 June 1770). On 2 March 1774 Charles City County recorde d the division of his estate ? nearly sixty slaves in Charles City and A melia counties ? among three sons.

To my son John, my 1184 acres in Amelia Co. that I purchased of Robert C oleman, James Tucker, James Tucker Jr., and William Bevel. If John di es without male heirs, land goes to my son William Marston Cowles, and i f he dies without male heirs, then to my son Thomas.
To son Thomas, the land & plantation I live on and the plantation oppos ite it in James City Co. If he dies without male heirs, then to son William M. and if he does, then to son John. If all my sons die without m ale heirs, then all land to be sold and money to my grandchildren then l iving.

To my daughter Martha Stith, wife of William Stith, 5 Negoes: Doll & her son Absalom, Nanny, Black Ned and Kate, also 117 pounds.
