THE OLD YEAR. by Francis Augustus Cox

'Farewell: A sound which makes us linger: - yet farewell" -Byron

Farewell, Old Year! with all they faultiness

And Fame- if thou has numbered any- In they great balance 'count with Him Who daff'd they Circlet from the Dread Unknown Of Infinite Duration 'merge, thou speak, In th' Abyssm of buried Time gone by, To mingle with the years before the Flood!

Thou't hurried past; and Lordly Man, With all his vaunted powers of mind, (His errant thoughts which pierce Eternity.) And proud intelligence, can trace three not:

''For, like a pebble cast into a pool, Thou mad'st they little orb, and so departed, Blending thine Inconsiderable minim With the age-mantling and expanding waters, Th' unmeasured Main of ever-rolling Ages! ' Thou'rt hurried past-and gone thy wreath'd smiles, They fears, they hopes, thy lamentations; Nor song of merriment, nor sigh or woe, Avail thee now, but as they serve to form A barrier or a stepping stone to bliss! For the Immortal Spirit drinks it's fill From Passing Time, and shapes it's passion'd

dreamings"

'For other Worlds! Old Year, adieu' He blotted from the memories of Good Beings For they inumerous failings' and be thou Remembered only in thine Argosies Of good; and the dark elonds which rol, Diming they sunshine with their murkiness, (So prays the Muses' Son) be only known of Through the reflection given them by they Virtues! '
