Biography

Birth

Sarah (___) was probably born before 1668, based on the estimated birth dates of her oldest known children. Her origins and last name at birth are uncertain. As discussed in the Research Notes below, various secondary sources give birth dates ranging from 1650-1663, identify birth locations, and claim that her last name at birth was "Lowe," but none appear to cite any reliable sources for these claims.

Marriage

Sarah (___) married Nicholas Day. She is identified as "my loving wife Sarah Day" in his will made in Baltimore County, Province of Maryland, on 1 December 1704.[1] Based on the estimated dates for the birth of their children, this marriage probably occurred by 1688 in Baltimore County, Province of Maryland.

Will

Sarah Day made her will in Baltimore County, Province of Maryland, on 20 October 1730.[2] In this will, she names:

  • daughter Dianah Merica
  • son Nicholas Day
  • son Edward Day
  • daughter Sarah Greer the wife of John Greer

Following is a transcription:

In the Name of God Amen I Sarah Day of the Colunty Afosd. being very Sick and Weak but of perfect and Sound Memory thanks be to God for it.

  • first I desire that all my lawfull debts be Justly paid.
  • Item. I Give & bequeath unto my Daughter Dianah Merica the bed which I always lay on my trunk a warming pan & porrage pott & Palett

her mark Sarah Day mark

This will was proved in Baltimore County, Province of Maryland, on 28 December 1736. Bond was made by Nicholas Day with Josiah Hendon and Thomas Amos.[3]

Death

Sarah (__) Day died before her will was proved in Baltimore County, Province of Maryland, on 28 December 1736.[3]

Children

Children of Sarah (___) and Nicholas Day, all named in her will, include:[2]

Various secondary sources give conflicting birth estimates for these children. Their exact birth dates and birth order appear to be uncertain.

Research Notes

Conflicting Claims Concerning Her Birth

Various secondary sources give differing dates for her birth, but none appear to cite any reliable source for these claims. For example:

  • Family Search: Sarah Lowe was born in 1650 in Denby, Derbyshire, England. [4]
  • Find-a-Grave: Sarah Lowe was born about 1650 in Denby, Derbyshire, England.[5]
  • Family Search: Sarah Lowe was born in England in 1663. [6]

Disputed Parents

Some researchers speculate that Sarah may have been the child of Vincent Lowe and Ann Cavendish.[5] It is unclear what if any evidence supports this theory and it is disputed by the Magna Carta Project, so those parents have been detached from this profile.

Her FamilySearch profile, also without source, identifies her parents as William Lowe 1599–1678 • KZGW-XNR Marriage: 9 October 1634 England AND Alis Norres 1608–Deceased • HZC5-5NZ

Additional Notes on Birth Age Estimate

Some birth year estimates for her are as early as 1650 but her youngest child, Diana, married in 1718. Diana would not likely have married much younger than age 18, which would place Diana's birth at 1700. It is not likely that Sarah was older than 45 at that time, and thus Sarah's birth would not have been earlier than 1655. Even with a 1630 birthdate for Nicholas, he would have been 25 years older than she. Sarah would still have been up to 81 years old at her death. "Sarah Day's will, dated October 20, 1730 and proved in 1736 is on file in the Hall of Records (Balt Co Wills, Box 5, Folder 87). Barbara Turner (WCRG44A) has Sarah's surname as Cox, m 1658. If she was 18 at marriage she was b. 1640 and died at age 90 to 96, and had her children 26 years after marriage, or age 44 to 59. Possibly marriage date was 1685. -

Since there does not appear to be any source for her parents or last name at birth, I think the LNAB should be changed to "Unknown"

sorry Jack, this is confusing? So many lines are duplicated? Why? like: "Sarah Lowe was born in 1650 in Denby, Derbyshire, England. [2]" and

"Sarah Lowe was born about 1650 in Denby, Derbyshire, England.[3]" And now because of the Magna Carta Project I have UNLINKED the f-a-g memorial from Ann Cavendish/That Vincent Lowe. There are sources on the Sarah Lowe f-a-g memorial........

Certain Records have her birth abt. 1663 England and died before 12/28/1736. Would explain why children were born in the 1880's.
