Research Notes

While a number of sources have reported that Zachariah was born in Rankin County, Mississippi (LaSalle Parish Genealogical Association, LaSalle Parish History: Families Past & Present), Rankin County was not formed until February 4, 1828. There were a number of Cox families living in Amite and Claiborne counties of Mississippi in the 1830s & 1840s and I suspected that Zachariah may have been born to one of these families.

His marriage to Eliza is reported to have occurred in Wilkinson County, Mississippi in 1830. However, there is no clear reason why they would have married in Wilkinson County. I have subsequently discovered the original Marriage Bann, Marriage License and Marriage Certificate for their marriage in the Jackson, Mississippi State Archives which shows they were married in Claiborne County, Mississippi.

Zachariah is found later in the 1840 census with his family in Rankin County, Mississippi.

Announcement of Zachariah and Eliza Randell's marriage is found in The Woodville Republican: Mississippi's Oldest Existing Newspaper. By O'Livea Neil Wilson Wiese. Vol 1: December 18, 1823- December 17, 1839, page 70. A copy can be obtained from Heritage Books www.HeritageBooks.com.

At age 19, unmarried and probably still living with his family, Zachariah would not have appeared in federal or state and territorial censuses until later. The same would apply to his future wife Eliza who was only about 15 years old, was most likely living with her parents, Joel and Rosannah Randall, in Claiborne County, Mississippi until her marriage to Zachariah in December 1830. There was only one Cox family living in Wilkinson County, Mississippi in 1830 and there were no sons of Zachariah's age living with that family. There were three Cox families in Claiborne County, Mississippi in 1830, only one family had sons in the 15-20 age group. That was a William Cox family. William is the name given to Zachariah's second son. His first son was named Zachary after himself. Census records support my speculation that Zachariah and Eliza may have both been living in Claiborne County leading up to their marriage. I have subsequently found Zachariah and Eliza's marriage records in Claiborne County, Mississippi where they were married. Zachariah's father's signature (William Cox) is on the Marriage Bann. In addition, I found reference to Zachariah and his siblings in the Claiborne County, Mississippi probate records for William Cox.

Notes from Edward Wayne Cox dated 21 June, 1995: "A Baptist preacher, a Mason, a slave owner, farmer/small plantation owner, police jury member, and father of 12 or more children. Lived about 3 miles East of Jackson Parish line in Caldwell Parish. Came from Rankin Co., MS, possibly born in South Carolina. A Feb 1961 issue of the Jackson Independent newspaper states that during 1859 he helped organize the New Union Church near Tullos, LA. Sources: History and research by Elsie Dell Cox Mead (now deceased) also research by Virginia Mead Keith/ also research done by Edward Wayne Cox, 11304 Hwy4, Chatham, LA 71226.

Additional sources: Newspaper article from the Feb. 9, 1961 "Jackson Independant", also 1840 census shows Zachariah in Rankin County, Mississippi. 26 March 1842 land conveyance records of Caldwell Parish, Louisiana shows him buying 160 acres there (Richard Bennett has a copy of the original land conveyance records). 1850 census shows him with family in Caldwell Parish. 1860 census of Jackson Parish records same individual with family (the area where Z. Cox lived is still a wilderness and it would be difficult for one to know exactly where the parish line really is). 1859 Police Jury records of Ward 5 (Ward 5 is located in the same general area described in the 1842 land transaction.), 1860 Masonic Lodge #198 (Brookline Lodge) rolls. Book, "History of Louisiana Baptists" by W. E. Paxton, 1888, shows Z. Cox at Pleasant Hill Church in 1860. "

Page 235 of "The LaSalle Parish History: Families Past and Present" published by the LaSalle Parish Genealogical Association about 1987 states

"New Union Baptist Church, Tullos, LA., was organized in 1859 by the Rev. Zachariah Cox, Benjamin Pendarvis, John Tullos, John Blake, Sr., Billie Williams, and others. Rev. Cox became the church's first pastor. Most everything between little River and Casto Sulphur Springs orbited around New Union Church."

The biographical sketch goes on to say,

"Zachariah Cox was born in 1811 in Mississippi and died in the 1870's and believed to be buried in the 'old' New Union Cemetery along with John Tullos."

The essay reports that Zachariah was a large land owner, Baptist preacher, doctor and slave owner. "He lived north of the seven runs on Castor Creek in the edge of Jackson Parish where it touches Caldwell Parish.".

During my visit to Louisiana in May 2009 I visited my cousin Wayne Cox who had previously located a land transaction for Zachariah Cox and had discovered the site many years ago. We visited the court house and determined the current location of that site. The property is now under the ownership of a timber company who has cleared much of the area. Our attempt to find the site was unsuccessful because many of the logging roads are unmarked. Subsequent to my visit, Wayne was able to relocate the site and photograph it for me.

According to Leona Miles Stringer, contributor to the book, "LaSalle Parish History: Families Past and Present" page 235) Zachariah Cox is believed to be buried in the "old" New Union Cemetery along with John Tullos another early LA pioneer. The town of Tullos was named for him. In 2009, I visited this site with the assistance of Ms. Jerry Milton and found John Tullos grave site along with a number of other unmarked graves. I believe Zachariah to be buried here. Notes from Debbie Clemons state, " Zachariah is buried in the old part of the cemetery. It has an iron gate with only a few headstones in it, none can be read. The original church burned- the new church was built a distance away, thus a new cemetery." Debbie believes that Zachariah's wife may also be buried there.

Page 90 of Jackson Parish, Lousiana history book published by the Jackson Parish Chamber of Commerce in 1982 reports: "On June 7, 1868 Zachariah Cox and Isiah Flourney were called together to constitute a Church of the Colored Brethren at Asberry near D.H. Kennady's. The principals (sic) or covenant this church was organized on were: to give themselves wholly unto the Lord, renouncing the vanities of the world, and in a spiritual sense, to give themselves to one another to live together in a church capacity according to the order of the gospel.".

The 1860 Slave Census indicates that Zachariah had four slaves: Female age 70, Female age 45, male age 23, and male age 21.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Zachariah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Zachariah:
