The 1841 Census shows Samuel (30), his wife Alice (25), children Sarah (5), and George (2) living in Preston Deanery. Also in the household is 7 year old Ellen Garner. Samuel is an agricultural labourer. [2]
In the 1851 Census of England and Wales Samuel gave his age as 44, and that his place of birth was Ireland, though he was a British Subject. From this information we can see his year of birth was 1807 [3], but I have no explanation for the comment that he was a British subject. We do not get to see what his response was for the 1861 Census, as by then he and his family were in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.
He married Alice Sophia Wrighton on the 10th October 1833, [4]at St Laurence Church in Braefield-on-the-Green. Samuel signed his name. whereas Alice and the two witnesses, John Harrold and Mary Layson made their mark. Samuel was from the parish of Quinton.
