Larry's initial training was in Drafting and Sheet-Metal work at Brewster Vocational High School in Tampa Florida. This led to a beginning in the Sign Industry, fabricating and installing signs. The first of many Licenses was as an Electric Sign Serviceman in Corpus Christi Texas, about 1970.
After three years in the Army, 1971-1974, with schooling as a helicopter mechanic (door gunner) and as an air traffic controller, Larry was employed by a lighting maintenance company, later purchased by Sylvania Lighting Services, where he received training in all types of lighting systems.
1978 was the year he was hired as an Air Traffic Controller by the Federal Aviation Administration. After attending the Air Traffic Academy in Oklahoma City he spent the next few years working at various airports throughout the southeast, ending his short career as a GS-12. It was in July of this year he married Miss Penny Blair.
Larry & Penny started Fluorescent Lighting and Signs in 1981 and a year later opened Bay Signs (manufacturing), selling both companies in 1985.
Larry founded COX Enterprises in 1986 as a sign-service company and in June of 1988, the name was changed to COX Electric and licensed by Hillsborough County and the state of Florida as an Unlimited Electrical Contractor. He added a Sign Contractor License, a Lighting Contractor license, and a Building Contractor license to his resume to be able to provide complete repair and installation services without needing subcontractors.
He is a past Director and Board Member at the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce and a 17 year member of the Tampa East Rotary Club, serving as President and Director. Larry is a past director at ECHO (Emergency Care Help Organization) and a past Chairman of the Rotary District 6890 Vocational Committee. He also served as a Director and Vice President of the (IEC) Independent Electrical Contractors FWCC, and served on many committees including Apprenticeship. Larry also served on the Hillsborough County Sign Appeals Board as well as the Advisory Board to the City of Tampa as a Master Electrician.
COX Electric was sold in June 2015 and Larry is currently employed as the License Qualifier.
Larry also works for the Attorney General's office on the New Motor Vehicle Arbitration Board and as an Arbitrator for the Florida Bar.
