Biography

Frances Godbey was born about 1782, in Caroline, Virginia, to parents John William Godbey and Naomi (Bane) Godbey

After she married Jacob Cox in 1797, she had seven children: Franklin William, b. 1799, Virginia; Jefferson, b. 1803, Virginia; Sarah R., b. 1804, Virginia; Jacob P., b. 1806, Virginia; and Elcy, b. 1807, Virginia. The family then moved to Kentucky and had two more sons, Jeremiah M.D., b. 1810, and James Squire A., b. 1818.

  • 1815 TAX LIST PULASKI, KY: "Cox,, Jacob 179 acres Pulaski; Pitman Cr; J. Williams; same; same; 1 white male over 21; 2 horses; 3.75 per acre" NOTE:This is the first time Jacob Cox shows up in the Pulaski Tax Records with his 179 acres on Pitman Creek which he bought that year. [2]
  • 1820 U.S. Census: Jacob Cox lived in Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky with two males ages 16-18 (Jefferson, 17, and ?), one female 10-16 (Elcy, 13), two persons worked in commerce. No mention of Jacob, about 45, or sons Franklin William, 21, Jacob P., 14, Jeremiah M.D., 10, or James Squire A.. 2. No mention of Franky, 38. Daughter Sarah R. married in 1819, age 15. Census index has name "Jacob Cos". Found Jacob Cox on page 19 of images, 7th line from bottom. [3]
  • 1820: Franky Godbey Cox, age 38, died.
  • Find a Grave: Franklin William Cox was the son of Jacob and Frances (Godbey) Cox. He was called "William." William married Mariah Clare on November 24, 1825, in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Note: The following source shows burial of "William and Mariah Cox" in this cemetery: Lawrence County, Missouri, Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. 1, Grammer Cemetery, pp. 60-62, published by Mary M. Curry, 1970.
