William was born on the 24 February 1844 to Samuel Cox and Alice Wrighton. [1]He was christened at Preston Deanery on the 31 March 1844. [2]
In 1851 he is living with his parents and siblings in Hardingstone. [3] A few months later he and his family are on their way to New Zealand aboard the Midlothian. They left England on the 22 June 1851 and arrived in Lyttelton on the 8 October 1851. William and his family were among the 81 passengers who travelled in steerage. No doubt, as a seven year old, he found the voyage very exciting.

Nine children were born to William and Annie over the next 22 years.
William died, aged 81, at his daughter Annie's home, on the 15 June 1925. [5][6]
He was buried at St Saviour's Anglican Church Cemetery, Kirk Road, Templeton, on the 17 June. [7][8]
