Biography

Charlotte Cox was born in late June or early July of 1793 in Yetminster, Dorset to William and Annice (aka Annie; aka Eunice) Cox; she was baptized on July 14, 1793. She married Samuel Pavord (aka Pavard/Paverd/Pavitt) on the 15th of August of 1815, at Yetminster. Note that the Pavord surname is subject to a wide range of misspellings, often causing confusion with the Pavitt family of the same geographical area; Samuel's name is given as "Pavitt" in the marriage record, and the apparent birth record of the couple's daughter Elizabeth in 1818 also shows her surname as "Pavit"[1].

Samuel and Charlotte had at least 5 children -- George, Charles, William, Eliza, Joseph, and Carolina. Samuel passed away about December 1824; Charlotte was remarried in 1831 to Joseph Hodges at Barwick, Somerset, and was likely widowed again as early as March of 1838, if an unsourced Find A Grave record for the burial of Joseph Hodges at Barwick is, as seems likely, that of her second husband[2] -- the death was also registered at Yeovil[3]. She is thus evidently the Charlotte Hodges recorded in the 1841 England & Wales Census (see source below) in the household of William Langdon along with some of her children by Samuel, as well as a few that are presumably hers from the second marriage.

A record of a third marriage, to Charles Butts at Yeovil during the first quarter of 1845, is presumed also to be hers. She is believed to be the Charlotte Butts whose death was recorded at Yeovil in the final quarter of 1880.[4]

Disambiguation

This Charlotte should not be confused with a different Charlotte Pavord, who was a sister of the first husband -- Samuel Pavord -- of the Charlotte of this profile. (The other Charlotte was married to Benjamin White in 1833, thus becoming Charlotte White; she lived, under that surname, until 1881.)
