Biography

Edna was born in 1862. [1] She is the daughter of Eliphalet Cox and Martha Dudley. Her father was a seaman. Her parents lived on the eastern side of Shore Road a short distance south of where John and Lovina Cox lived according to an 1861 map of Washington County, Maine. [2]

Edna’s mother passed away in 1864. It is believed she died during a diptheria outbreak along the southern part of Shore Road. Several Smith, Hallowell, and Cox family members died of diptheria in 1864. Edna’s father re-married. In 1870 Edna was living with her father, step-mother, and four siblings. Edna was seven years old. [3]

At the time of the 1880 U.S. Census, Edna (age 17) was living with her older sister Eliza (age 21), Eliza’s husband Henry Kilby (age 25) and their two children. Edna was listed in the census record as a “servant.” [4]

On March 17, 1882 she married George Clark Ennis. The marriage took place in Edmunds, Maine. [5] After getting married, they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In the 1885 Minnesota state census, Edna (23) and George (25) were living in Minneapolis with their two daughters: Mildred (3) and Marion (1). Mildred was born in Maine while Marion was born in Minnesota, according to the state census record. [6]

In the 1895 Minnesota state census, Edna (33) and George (34) were still living in Minneapolis with their five children: Mildred (13), Marion (11), Walter (9), Herbert (4), and Harold (5 months). [7]

In the 1900 U.S. Census Edna (37) and George (38) were living on Humboldt Street North in Ward 10 of Minneapolis. One of their children, Harold, had died on July 24, 1895, the same year he was born. [8] Their six remaining children were: Mildred (18), Marion (16), Walter (14), Herbert (8), Gertrude (2), and Ralph (6 months). [9]

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, Edna (43) and George (44) were still living in Minneapolis with their six children: Mildred (23), Marion (21), Walter (19), Herbert (14), Gertrude (8), and Ralph (5). [10]

In 1910 Edna (47) and George (49) were living in Minneapolis, Ward 10, with their six children: Mildred (27), Marion (25), Walter (24), Herbert (19), Gertrude (12), and Ralph (10). [11]

Edna’s husband George passed away in Minneapolis on September 23, 1917. [12]

Edna’s daughter Mildred passed away in Faribault, Minnesota on November 14, 1918 at the age of 36. [13]

Edna passed away in Minneapolis on January 30, 1943. [14]
