Biography

John Cox would have been born in Pemaquid before 1640.[citation needed] He is referred to as the brother-in-law of William Cox of Salem. He was most likely a half brother. His son John's adult baptism record in 1692 refers to his wife being Mary Cocks, likely still alive at this time and a member of the church there. John would have either died by then or was not a church member.

In 1673, Jno Cock was one of many who took the oath of fidelity as a constable or jury man.

During King Philip's War in 1676, Indians attacked many English settlements including Pemaquid, and John Cock and his wife fled to Dorchester with his son John; other Coxes fled to Salem and Beverly. It seems that at some point before 1679 they joined about 55 other people on the island of Saccadahoe close to Pemaquid. who applied for more land in the area. On Sept. 6 1679 they received a grant of land for "a township on the southern end of Rowswick Island in the mouth of the Kennebec River," being given all rights of a town, John Senior being appointed as one of 4 constables. It's likely that at least John Jr. returned to Dorchester for a short time to get married and then returned to Pemaquid around 1686, living on the farm of William Cox at Cox's Heath. The Siege of Pemaquid during King William's War in 1689 drove them back to Dorchester. They had at least 2 children: John and Thomas.
