Biography

Samuel was born about 1756.[1] He is the son of Samuel Cox and Hannah Wierman. [2]

According to his descendants and supported by records, Samuel Griggs Cox, Sr. first married Elizabeth Hopewell on 2 Nov 1775. [3] In the marriage records Samuel, Sr. and Elizabeth are listed as being from Burlington, New Jersey. This supports Samuel Cox, Sr. being the same as records from Pennsylvania because Burlington, New Jersey is a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was originally settled by Quakers, which these Coxes appear to be. [4] Samuel would have been about 19 years of age at the time of his first marriage.

After the death of Elizabeth, presumably from the birth of his child, Thomas Cox, Samuel married his first cousin, Martha Cox, daughter of Solomon Cox. The Find a Grave memorial states indicates that he and Martha married in 1778. Martha Cox and her father, Solomon Cox, were both disowned by Cane Creek Monthly Meeting on February 4, 1780, for "marrying out of unity to her first cousin". [2] He would have been 22 years of age at the time of his marriage. According to the family Bible, Samuel was 76 years of age when he died, which supports a birthdate of 1756. [2] He died on 29 Jul 1832 and was buried in Williamsburg, Whitley, Kentucky. [1]

Samuel Cox was considered to be the founding father of Williamsburg, Kentucky. [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:

Based on information provided by Bob Cox, a descendant of Thomas Cox and Samuel Cox, Jr., along with supporting records, I have added Elizabeth Hopewell as the first wife of Samuel Cox, Jr.
Since Samuel Cox Jr., son of Samuel and Hannah Cox, married his first cousin, Martha Cox, at the approximate age of 22, they had children until 1803 and Martha did not marry until the death of Samuel, I see no evidence that he had a second wife by the name of Elizabeth. I am removing Elizabeth from this Samuel Cox after some research to see if she belongs to someone else.

Also, there is no Thomas Wesley Cox in the list of children for Samuel Cox Jr and Martha. He needs to be attached to some other father. I am detaching Thomas Wesley Cox and his mother, Elizabeth, from this Samuel Cox.
