Biography

Henry was born after 1698. He is the son of William Cox and Frances Chenay.

His wife was Ann Wright as proven by the wills of her parents George Wright (d 1770) and Elizabeth Wright (d 1775).

HENRY4 COX (William3, Henry2, William1) was born aft 1698. Henry died bef Apr 15, 1793 in Essex Co. Va. Will of Henry Cox November 24, 1782 and probated April 15, 1793, Essex Co., VA, W.B. 15/25. IN the name of Amen I Henry Cox of Essex County being in perfect health a;nd memory do think fit to make my last Will to Goc who gave it me, my Body to the Earth to be desently Buried by my executors my worldly Estate I dispose of as followeth Imprimas I Lend to my wife Ann Cox my whole Estate during her Natural Life Item I then give to my daughter Molly Cox ne bed and furinture Itme I give to my daughter Katy Cox one bed and furinture Item my will and desire is that all the remaining part of my Estate be sold to the highest bidder and and the money to be Equally divided between all my Children Viz. John Cox, Elizabeth Ball, Amy Davis, Clary Johnson, Molly Cox, & Katy Cox. If any of my Children should die without heirs of their body lawfully begotten then that part to be equally divided between the survivers. Lastly I appointy Ann Cox, and John Cox my Executors to this my last will and Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of November one thousand seven hundred and Eighty two.

Signed Henry Cox At a Court held for Essex County at Tappohannock on the 13th day of April 1793 this last Will and Testament of Henry Cox Deceased was produced into Court by John Cox one of the Exors therein named, proved by the oath of James Wright, the subscribing Witness and the Court being satisfied that the same was signed With the proper handwriting of the said Testator, and the said Will being also proved by the oath of the said Executor the same was ordered to be recorded. Whereupon a Certificate was granted to the said John Cox in order to his obtaining probat of the said Testament in due form. Teste Wm Lee C Clk Know all men by these presents that We John Cox and William Ball and Wm Jones are held and firmly bound to Wm Waring William Latoure, Robt Baylor and Sheskley Rennolds Gentlemen Justices of the Court of Essex County now sittin gin the sum of three hundred Pounds to the payment of which well and truly to be made to the said Justices and their successors we bind our selves and each of us, our and each of our heirs executors and admrs jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated the 15th day of April Anno Dom: 1793 The Condition of this obligations is that if the said John Cox Executor of the last will and testament of Henry Cox deceased do make a true and perfect Inventory of all and Singular the goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased which have or shall come to the hands possession or knowledge of him the said John Cox or unto the hands or possession of any other person or persons for him and the same so make do exhibit in to the County Court of Essex at such time as he shall be thereto required by the said court, and the same goods Chattels and Credits do well and truly administer according to law, and make a just and true account of his actings and doings therein when thereunto required by the said Court, and further do well and truly pay and deliver all the legacies contained & specified in the said Will as far as the said goods Chattels and Credits will extend according to the Value thereof; and as the law shall Charge him, then this obligation to be void, or else to remain in full force.
