Ellen was born in 1819 to George Coyle. [1]
She arrived in Australia in 1841 aged 22 as a free settler on the vessel Glenswilly, from County Cavan, Ireland. [2]
She obtained employment at the Coach and Horses Inn in Cumberland St in the The Rocks area of Sydney. In January 1842 she was indicted and found guilty of stealing from her employer, a Mrs Thompson, and she was sentenced to six months imprisonment in the Sydney gaol. [3]
The entrance book for Darlinghurst gaol records her date of admission as 2 November 1842.[4]
Ellen married Edward Hartnett, a convict from Cork, Ireland, on 4 May 1844 at Campbelltown, NSW. [5]
Her son Edward William was born on March 12, 1845, in Gundagai, New South Wales.
Her son Andrew was born on November 24, 1846, in Goulburn, New South Wales.
Her daughter Susan was born in 1848, in Yass, New South Wales.
Her daughter Mary was born on January 24, 1851, in Gundagai, New South Wales.
By mid 1852, Ellen was living at Darbalara, near Gundagai, NSW, with Edward and their children.
In June 1852, Gundagai was hit by a severe flood which claimed the lives of one third of the inhabitants of the town. According to the family history related to Ellen's great grand-daughter, Ellen went outside in the night during this period to look for a cow and was never seen again; she is presumed to have drowned in the flood.[6] Not listed among flood casualties.
