Crayfford - Crafford

Great Mongeham, Kent Page 234-237

The Crayford family was long seated at Great Mongeham in Kent. Hasted, in his History of Kent (Vol. IV, p. 137), says "The Crayford House, alias Stonehall, was a mansion, situated a small distance westward of the church (of Great Mongeham). For many descents (it) was the property and residence of the family of Crayford, whose estates in this neighborhood were very considerable. They were written in very ancient deeds, de Mongeham MAgna, and in more modern ones, of Great Mongeham. In an old roll which gives an account of those Kentish gentlemen, who were with Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick, in the year 1460, at the Battle of Northampton, fighting on behalf of the then vioctorious House of York, mention is made of William Crayford, esq.; who was then made knight banneret by K. Edward IV, for his eminent service performed there, and at different times before; and bore for his arms: 'or, on a chevron sable, 3 eagle's heads erased argent. From this Sir William Crayford, knight-banneret, the seat and estate descended down to William Crayford of Great Mongeham, esq., who died possessed of it in King Charles II's reign, and seems to have been the last of his family who resided there."

The visitation of Bedford and Kent give the following line of descent from the above Sir William Crayfford. 1. Sir William Crayford, made a knight-banneret at the Battle of Northampton 1460, lived during the time of King Edward IV his son 2.Guy Crafford of Great Mongeham, who had 3.John Crafford of G.M. in Kent married a daughter of Monyngs and had 4.John Crafford of G. M. in Kent m. a daughter and heir of Edward Wood of London and had 5.John Crafford of G.M., Usher to the Privy Chamber of King Henry VIII, m. Margaret , dau. of John Crispe of Thanet, Kent, and had 6.Edward Crafford of G. M. m. Mary, dau . and heir of Henry Atseas of Herne, Kent, and had 7. Sir William Crafford of G. M., died 14 August 1623 aged 68. He married Anne, daughter of John Norton of London and Suffolk who died May 26, 1624. The arms of Norton were "azure, a manch? ermine." Hasted says, "In the 7th year of King Edward VI, Sir William Craford of Mongeham, kt., son and heir of Edward Craford, by Mary, one of the sisters and co-heirs of Henry Atsea above mentioned was found to hold by inquisition the third part of all the lands and tenements that were Anthony Atsea's."

Where is the evidence of his knighthood? Are we mistaking him for his ancestor William Crafford, who was supposedly knighted by King Edward IV after the Battle of Northhampton?
