When Gardner Craft was born on January 3, 1768, in Pomfret, Connecticut, his father, Benjamin, was 32 and his mother, Anna, was 25. He married Salome Williams on February 1, 1797, in Brooklyn, Connecticut. They had five children in 13 years. He died on February 4, 1823, in Troy, New York, at the age of 55.
