Tribute To Late Albert H. Craft
An Appreciation
(By H.J.W.)
With the death last week of Mr Albert Henry Craft, one of the last links with the early days of Mangrove and the Hawkesbury is severed, for his 92 years goes well back into local history.
His wife only recently predeceased him. She was 93. It was a splendid age and well deserved by this grand old couple.
I knew him well; have worked with him and played with him.
He loved his cricket and it was cricket he played in every avenue of life.
He never stooped to petty things nor held any personal grudge. Even in the most unguarded moment he betrayed not the slightest lingering, lurking clue to any animosity, insincerity or deceit or any of the other subtleties or character weaknesses of our time. There was no room for any of these in his make-up.
He was a man of unimpeachable character and sterling integrity.
He was widely known and enjoyed the esteem and regard of a very large circle of friends.
It is a tribute to his leadership and personality, that on his numerous road works and other contracts, when he often had large bodies of men under his control, he invariably enjoyed their fullest confidence and respect. I
For years, it will be remembered, his sportsground was the scene of many cricket matches and a rendezvous of sporting fans.
His home, too, always a centre of hospitality, was the venue of many cricket dinners.
He was a fine example of a rugged country gentleman — one of nature's best.
Indeed, no finer character has ever set foot on the Hawkesbury.
And now he goes back to his own native soil — back to Mother Earth.
"Home is the hunter, home from the hills, and the sailor home from the sea".
