Biography

Lived in Portsea Island, Hampshire, England before coming to settle in Hamilton, Ontario. Arrived at Quebec on 24th Jun 1870 on board the vessel Crocodile. Travelling with him is his wife Sarah, children Elizabeth, James, Sarah and Alexandra. He was the gardener for the Hamilton Municipal Cemetery, the first municipal cemetery in Ontario. Family lore says he laid out the gardens there (there is a sunken garden area) and when he died was buried there on a hill. This cemetery is on the escarpment and there is a mound in the cemetery famous for being part of the war of 1812 and also a hilly part, however Alexander is buried on a relatively flat area. His son David who also worked there is buried in the hilly area. His plot was given to his wife by the Cemetery Board as recorded in the papers of the time.
