Research Notes

Her name
The name of William Hatfield's first wife is not certain. She was the mother of his children born before 1823. There is no known contemporaneous record of their marriage or records of the births of their children that confirm her name. The possibilities for her actual name are the following:
  • Nancy McMahan. According to a biographical sketch of her son Nathan published in 1897 when he was 84, her name was "Nancy McMahan".[2] Assuming this is correct, she was likely related to his second wife, Angeline McMahan -- possibly the older sister of Angeline's father Andrew McMahan, who served in the War of 1812 in the company commanded by her husband's brother Nathan Hatfield (1770-1843). However, if she was related to her son's second wife, the biographical sketch fails to mention it.
  • Nancy Craig. A genealogy of the Cleveland family published in 1899 states that her name was "Nancy Craig", the mother of Margaret Hatfield born in 1802.[3] No source is provided for this information. It should be noted that her husband's brother Nathan Hatfield (1770-1843) married a woman named "Nancy Craig" (Nancy being a diminutive of Agnes) in 1814 in Belmont County, Ohio.[4] So, it is possible that her name was "Nancy", but her surname was confused with the surname of her brother-in-law's second wife, Nancy Craig. Alternatively, they may have been related, either cousins, or aunt/niece.
  • Elizabeth Nancy Craig. According to her memorial on Find A Grave, her name was "Elizabeth Nancy Craig".[1] No sources are provided for this information, and it was possibly based on the information contained in the Cleveland Genealogy described above. It is not clear where the first name "Elizabeth" comes from.
