Biography

Margaret Ann Craig's father was Samuel Craig who worked as a labourer. She was born in Belfast (as per 1901 census).

As per her marriage record, Margaret was employed as a 'folder', possibly in the flax linen factories in the protestant Shankill area of West Belfast where she was married. Later in the census records she is recorded as working as 'seamstress', as is her daughter Sally.

Margaret Ann Craig married James Hamilton in the Belfast district.[1] They had 11 children in about 15 years: Eliza, Maggie, Samuel, Sally, Fanny, Bob, Nancy, Hugh, Lizzie, John and William, three of whom died young.

Margaret and James raised their family on Swift St (1897) 37 Mount Street (1901) and 71 and 157 Woodstock Road (#71 in 1911 and 157 later till at least 1929) in the Ormeau district of East Belfast.

'Margaret Ann Hamilton' died (age 40) in the Belfast district.[2] likely as a result of giving birth to her 11th child, William, who died two years later.

For Margaret Ann's mother there is a record for a Samuel Craig (father James) marrying a Margaret McCracken March 2, 1848 in Newtownards, County Down. This looks very possible for the parents of Margaret Ann Craig. Sharing the same first name as her mother is one clue, but the fact that Margaret Ann's first born middle name is McCracken is a very strong indicator.

There is a record for the birth of (another female) child to Samuel Craig and a Margaret McCracken in 1864 in Belfast.
