John was born and not registered on May 30th 1830.[1] His parents were Gabriel Craig (engineman at a coalpit) and Mary Rankine.
John Craig of Old Farm Rutherglen married Margaret Cleland of King Street Rutherglen on 7 December 1855 at Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[1] Her usual residence was Dunbarton. He was a 25 year old farm servant whose parents were both deceased at the time of the marriage; Gabriel Craig (engineman at a coalpit) and Mary Rankine. She was a 21 year old domestic servant. Her father was a blacksmith, William Cleland and mother Jane Cleland nee Roy. Only her father was alive at the time of the marriage.[1]
The 1861 Census list John Craig as a 30 year old carter living with his wife Margaret (27 years old) and children Gabrial (5), Jane (3) and John (1) at Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[2]
In the 1871 Census he was listed as a rope maker living at 43 South Woodside Street, Barony Park, Glasgow, in the registration district of Milton, Lanarkshire, Scotland with his wife Margaret and children Mary Jane (9), Elizabeth (6), James (3) and William (1).[3]
He was a ropemaker living in Glasgow.
On the marriage certificate of his son John, 29 December 1882, John is listed as a Carver.
