Biography

John’s Early Years John was the second child of William and Elizabeth. His older sister, Barbara, born in 1845 only lived about four years. Therefore, John was the eldest of the children. He was about 7 years old when his parents bought the family farm on Lot 21, Concession 5 of Seymour Township, Northumberland County in Ontario. He attended the nearby country school and helped around the farm.

As a young man starting out in life, John entered a partnership with Robert John Eley in Campbellford. They manufactured and sold home furniture such as bedroom sets, dining room tables & chairs, couches and various other pieces. They also ran the funeral service for the district. This partnership was dissolved on 09 Feb 1888 with R. J. Eley taking over the business and paying $4,000.00 to John. This business continued to be successful and eventually was taken over by the Bennett's.

John Craighead and Letitia Cochrane, were married on 27 Mar 1889 at Warkworth, Ontario. They moved into the 150 acres farm that John had purchased on 22 Dec 1888 at Lot 20, Concession 9 of Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., at Godolphin, approximately 10 kilometres west of the town of Campbellford, Ontario. Here, they had 7 children of which the first 3 died as infants. John Seymour was the second oldest of the surviving children (4 boys). John and Letitia sold this farm on 1 Feb 1905 and moved the family into Campbellford. Then on 3 Jan 1907, they purchased an 164 acres farm on the north halves of Lots 25 & 26 of Concession 9 in Sidney Twp., Hastings Co., on the east side of Stirling, Ontario. John died on 13 Apr 1923 and was buried in the family plot at Stirling Cemetery. Letitia lived another 20 years on the farm with son Percy and his wife Nora until 29 Aug 1943 when she died and was buried in the Stirling Cemetery.

John and Letitia After dissolution of his business partnership, John went farming again and purchased an 150 acres farm on Lot 20, Concession 9 of Percy Township, Northumberland County on 22 Dec 1888 for $4,500.00. Then on 27 Mar 1889, John married his second wife, Letitia Cochrane. Letitia was a neice of John's first wife, Jane Acheson. John and Letitia had seven children but the first three died as infants. The other four, all boys, were born and raised on this farm.

The Final Years for John and Letitia John died on 13 Apr 1923 and was buried in the family plot in the Stirling Cemetery. Letitia continued living on the farm with her son Percy until her death on 29 Aug 1943 and was buried alongside her husband.
