Biography

Joel Crain, born 27 February, Granville County, NC, (probably son of Ambrose Crain and Elizabeth) married Rachel (Unknown) about 1775. Rachel was born 1760-1770, and died before 1825.

On 10 August, 1825, in Limestone County, AL, Joel married Margaret Mitchell.

Joel's application for a Revolutionary War Pension documented that he enlisted in the Wilkes County, NC, Militia in 1780 and served in the NC Line for three months patrolling at Cross Creek. He re-enlisted and served a second term of four to five months.

Joel, with his older brother William, moved from Wilkes County, NC, to Georgia, where he was on the Wilkes County, GA, 1792 Tax Roll.

Joel and Rachel resided in Franklin County, GA, when they transferred property in Elbert County, GA, in 1798. In 1806 Joel sold land acquired in 1789 in Franklin County, GA.

Joel was on the tax rolls of Bedford County, TN, from 1806-1825 where he sold land in 1816 and 1822 and was in Warren County, TN, in 1820.

Joel's last move was about 1825 to what was then "Webb's Mill" on the Hatchie River in Hardeman County, Tennessee. He and his brother William established a port and supply depot there and it soon became a thriving town in the wilderness. Soon there was two churches, a school, several businesses, and most importantly, a stage stop and inn on the route from Bolivar to Purdy. The now bustling community was called "Crainville, Tennessee".

As the railroad moved into the area in the early 1900's, Crainville residents began to purchase lots surrounding railroad tracks and a new depot was built by the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad Company on a farm owned by Kimborough Hornsby. The name of the town was then changed to Hornsby, Tennessee.

Joel (as was his brother, William) was buried in an unmarked grave near his home. In 1976 an historical marker was dedicated in the Hatchie Cemetery, Crainville Road, Hornsby, TN, to the memory of American Revolution soldiers--William and Joel Crain.
